Bruce Posner's Introduction to Unseen Cinema can be read on-line. Posner argues against the European-art centric model for the appearance of an art-as-cinema, presenting his Unseen Cinema programs as the proof for the argument he makes in this article.
While his claims may be debateable because many of the films he recovers are dubious as art works in their historical context (their interest as art comes from events that came after their production, and they had no part in the change of values, unlike recognized avant-garde works). While these questions need to be asked of this program, it is nevertheless interesting. If anything, it tells us a great deal about how we perceive the past through the interests and demands of the present.
