A ONE-NIGHT ART EVENT AT HOTEL BIBA
FEATURING 28 ARTISTS ON APRIL 25, 2003
West Palm Beach, FL (April 7) The second annual SHOWTEL will take place at Hotel Biba in West Palm Beach on Friday, April 25, 2003 from 7-11 pm. Over twenty artists from South Florida will be taking over the hotel to install their site-specific projects. The installations, projection and sound pieces, sculptural, and performance art works will be placed in rooms and throughout the grounds of the hotel. Closer Magazine called last years event, attended by over two hundred people, one of the most exhilarating and original art events of 2002.
Curator Kara Walker-Tom says, The intent of this show is to give artists the opportunity to create something experimental and unique, outside of a commercial gallery setting, whereby they directly respond to the hotel setting, literally or conceptually. The conditions that nothing be nailed on a wall and that the work has to be installed the same day of the show leads to creative solutions and spontaneous installations.
The nationally acclaimed Hotel Bibas popularity, historic designation, and highly modern design add to the distinctiveness of this art exhibition. It was named Best Hotel of Broward and Palm Beach County in 2002 by The New Times and City Link; the New York Times called Biba a hip hotel with a chic wine bar, gardens and tropical pool; and the Discovery Channel highlighted Hotel Biba in their Great Hotels Series as the Best for Less in the state of Florida.
The artists participating in the show (at time of print) are, from the Palm Beach area: Marsha Christo, Peggy Jean Dodson, Phillip Estlund, Kenny 5, Sarah Knudtson, Gabriel Lazlo, Rick Newton, Sally Ordile, Carol Prusa, Jody Servon, Tom Whitton, Susan Weiner; from the Broward/Miami area: Rosemarie Chiarlone , Elaine Carlson, Michael Betancourt, Gianinna Dwin, Mercedes Kehoe, Jeroen Nelemans, Josefina Posch, Carolina Salazar,Tom Scicluna, Edward Zawackis; New York artist David Baskin (courtesy of Ingalls and Associataes in North Miami); and from Sarasota, Barbara Bernstein, Elisabeth Condon, David Garratt.
