random how-tos

Liti Holo offers an easy, home hlogram kit. I haven't tried this stuff yet, but it sounds interesting. I wonder how difficult it would be to do something movie-like with this stuff. I've seen a number of very large holograms that have a movie-like quality to them: as you move past them, the figures, etc. change their position (move).

research: VISUAL MUSIC

Browse the contents of this study of avant-garde film aesthetics. It looks like you can get a good sense of what the book argues and covers from the extensive samples of this book posted on-line. (Recommended.)

theory: CRITICAL OBSERVATIONS

In 2002, Shortfilm.de ran a pair of articles [1][2] comparing the Black Box and While Cube models for exhibiting film & video. Interesting analysis, esp. in light of the current ways that white cube video is developing into a subgenre of Academic-syle painting.

random art notes

Video Bulb allows you to play a continuous animation of Ryota Kuwakubo's BitMan (.avi) on your TV.

I guess this means the era of plug-and-play digital video artworks has actually arrived, at least for some simpler works. I guess it's just a matter of time before more complex art work is available with similar technology. The only limiting factors that occurr to me immediately is electrical power and storage, and both of these are improving every year. How long before I can get a Wilfred Lumia box in this format (or something more contemporary)?
